Spring Break 2012 – San Diego, CA

Coronado Beach - San Diego, California

So last week we woke the kids up earlier than normal and surprised them with a Spring Break trip to sunny San Diego. (Thank you frequent flyer miles!) It was a much needed family trip and we had an absolute blast. We were total tourists and loved every minute of it.

When you are into photography like I am, going on a trip to a new place is particularly challenging.  First, what gear do I bring and second, how do I get unique photographs that thousands of others haven’t already taken? Well, you know what, I threw those worries out the window and went with fairly minimal gear; a digital point & shoot, my Bessa rangefinder with 21mm lens and an old Olympus 35RC rangefinder with a fixed 42mm lens. All of these cameras are small and light with the Bessa being the only serious camera in my bag. I also decided I didn’t care about taking unique pictures. This was a family trip and the point of this trip was to document our trip so that years from now we could look back and see what we did together as a family. 15 years from now, no one looking at these old images will really care what kind of artsy fartsy images I took. I shot our trip with joy and because I carried less gear, I traveled lighter and had more fun.

So…I downloaded the images last night and scanned through them. Looks like I got some great post card type material.  I think I got some good stuff that is, or will be, meaningful to our family. I also plan to drop off my film today for processing. Can’t wait to see that too.

Anyway, I gotta roll. Lot’s to do and catch up on today. I’ll be back with more soon.
