It’s no secret that I love combining my love of bikes and riding with my love for photography. For me, they just go hand in hand. However, as a father and a husband, I also try to take pictures of my family too! As my kids grow up I am realizing more and more the importance of documenting big and little things in our lives and in my kids lives. Yesterday was an Earth Day dress up contest at school and my daughter took it upon herself to make a costume. I took the image below on the way to the bus stop.
When I see this picture, I see the preparation that went into it. I see the excitement that I saw, heard and felt as her idea came together. I see this picture and think that is my girl. As a parent, I am thankful that I captured it. But, as I look at it more and more and get a bit more introspective, I think there is a deeper meaning to all of this and as a photographer, I am glad I captured it. That deeper meaning being an encouragement to be more like children in how we see, view and set about accomplishing things.
As I look at this image of my daughter looking up into the sky and out into this world, it is hard not to think of hope. I see her looking into the sky and think that the youth have big ideas and at the same time they are not deterred by the same things that adults. Kids see possibility and that is what I see in her eyes. If I could attack each day and each problem with the same joy she tackled her Earth Day costume and live with the same care and love that she has for the earth, then I would be a better person and the world would be just a little bit better.
While it may be true that I am just seeing those things and thinking those things because I am her proud father, so be it. I can live with that. But just maybe there is something to what I am seeing in that image. I think I am going to go with that!
